Monday Marathon: Mischievous Kiss is hosted by Faye at The Social Potato!
So this is my first J-drama experience. I haven't read the manga, nor have I watched other live adaptations, so I'm like a fresh baby turtle!
The plot of the first episode is pretty simple. Kotoko Aihara has been in love with cool, intelligent Naoki Irie for two years. Naoki is clearly out of Kotoko's league, but that doesn't stop her from writing a letter confessing her feelings for him. Predictably, Naoki rejects her (in the most assholish way possible), leaving Kotoko humiliated and upset.
Luckily, Kotoko doesn't dwell on this for too long because she realizes what a huge dick Naoki is. A few days later, Kotoko and her father are moving into their new, hand-built house, when a 2 centimeter meteor falls out of the sky and demolishes their home (what are the odds of that happening?).
Good thing Kotoko's dad has an awesome friend who will take them in! But as luck would have it, her dad's friend turns out to be none other than Naoki's dad. Now we have Kotoko living in the same house as the boy who brutally rejected her.
The Good
The comedic parts were funny, if a little over the top, but I'm use to over-the-top humor from k-dramas, so it didn't phase me that much. The part where the meteor hit Kotoko's house was just so ridiculous, I accidently spewed juice on my computer screen (RIP clean laptop). I also liked Kotoko's dad and Naoki's dad, especially when Naoki's dad pokes fun at himself over Naoki inheriting his mom's looks.Speaking of the mom, she was pretty gosh darn adorable. A nice change from all the evil witch mom's that are so popular in anime. The boy who plays Naoki is cute, even if he looks like jailbait.
The Bad
Bad acting is bad. Like, terribad. Despite being eye-candy, Naoki's actor was completely static throughout the whole episode. I get that he's suppose to be cold and aloof, but that doesn't mean no facial expressions whatsoever. The rest of the cast suffered from over-acting that sometimes took away from the genuine humor and made it fake.Naoki's little brother creeped me out too. . . I feel like that kid is possessed by Satan.
Verdict
Not bad. It had its cringe-worthy moments, but overall it was pretty cute, and I look forward to the rest!
