Top Ten Books I'd Give To Readers Who Have Never Read Middle Grade

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. This week's Top Ten Tuesday is all about books I'd give readers who've never read Middle grade! It's probably improbable, but if by some bizarre chance you've never picked up a MG book in your life, here's what you should start with! There's only going to be six, though, because my brain went kaplooey writing this post, and I suddenly forgot every book I've ever read. Don't you hate when that happens?

1) The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling

I'm cheating by putting the entire series as number one, but it's not like you can just read one book and be done with it.

2) The Baby-Sitters Club by Ann M. Martin

Excuse my language for this one, but the BSC was the shit when I was a kid. Whenever I went to the bookstore, I always made sure I got a new one. All the adventures were awesome, the girls were awesome (especially Claudia friggin Claudia) and the spinoffs were awesome. And at the end of the day, you knew these girls were going to sit the fuck out of some kids.

3) Artemis Fowl Series by Eoin Colfer

Twelve-year-old criminal mastermind, secret society of fairies, sarcasm, what more do you want?

4) A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket

I think the humor here is so perfectly middle school, and the plot is absolutely ludicrous.

5) Kim/Kimi by Hadley Irwin

I read this a lot in the fourth grade. It was probably my favorite book of that year. Kim/Kimi is the story of a biracial girl struggling to figure out her Japanese heritage while living in an all-white Iowa town. This book is good if you're looking for a biracial coming-of-age story.

6) Sweet Valley Twins Series by Francine Pascal

Just following the average day in the lives of twins Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield as they enter middle school and go through typical girl stuff. I use to put Sweet Valley in the same league as BSC, but reading it now, I realized that the characters kind of suck and that Jessica is a sociopath. It's pretty much The New Adventures of Mary-Kate and Ashley without the crime solving awesomeness.
